Rina Schumer, a graduate research assistant at the Desert Research Institute and a Ph.D. student in hydrogeology at the University of Nevada, Reno, has been awarded the $15,000, three-year Sulo and Aileen Maki Hydrology/Hydrogeology Fellowship. Schumer, who has a master's degree in hydrogeology from UNR, is studying ground water modeling and the transport of materials by ground water.
The Makis, investors in Las Vegas real estate in the 1950s, have been long standing benefactors of the Desert Research Institute. The fellowship is available only to applicants to Ph.D. programs at UNR and UNLV focusing on water resources.
