Fourth DRI Golf Extravaganza at Red Hawk nearly sold out
Thoughts of historic St. Andrews Golf Course may distract tournament players

The Desert Research Institute's Golf Extravaganza at Red Hawk Golf Club July 15 will be followed by the British Open at St. Andrews Golf Course in Scotland the following week, but the two tournaments have more in common than simply sharing the month of July. One of the teams in DRI's tournament may be taking a dream golf vacation to the Scottish birthplace of the sport if one of their members aces the fourth hole during tournament play.

DRI's Golf Extravaganza, which benefits DRI's environmental research programs, had only three team slots remaining for the event as of July 6, said Jerry Cail, the tournament's founder and chairman. The tournament will also tempt participating teams with three other hole-in-one prizes, including a three-day course at the Jim Flick Golf School, two-year leases on brand new Jeep Cherokees and ten-year memberships in the Red Hawk Golf Club.

All players will also pick up the Extravaganza's exceptional tee package, which has become well known among golfers in the Reno area for the outstanding selection of golf goodies. To sweeten the trip to St. Andrews, team members will be able to take along a guest and will receive $2,500 in spending money (which they'll probably need for the extra balls on the tough Scottish course), with travel and lodging included.

The Extravaganza's tournament motto, "Where recreation meets the environment," emphasizes DRI's partnering with Red Hawk, a natural match between DRI's environmental research mission and Red Hawks environmentally friendly policies, and its designation as Nevada's first Audubon Signature Sanctuary. The tournament will kick off with an evening reception on Friday, July 14 and conclude following play on Saturday with a barbecue and the awarding of prizes.

Special sponsors for the tournament include Bear Industries Publishing and Printing, Red Hawk Golf Club, Barrick Gold Corporation, DRI Research Foundation Trustee Emerita Betty Stout, Nevada Bell, Golf USA, Sprint, Nevada Mining Association, IGT, Pepsi of Reno, Pacific Granite & Marble, LEDCOR, Groves Fischer, Inc., ad spec Advertising Specialty Company, and Reno Typographers.

Individual sign-ups are $300, and teams are $1,200. For further information contact Kiemmy Boc at DRI at 673-7350, or kboc@dri.edu or visit the Golf Extravaganza web site at: http://ia.dri.edu/Golf/golf.html
