DRI Graduate Research Assistant wins 2003 Maxey Paper Competition

Desert Research Institute Graduate Research Assistant Jie Xu has received the 2003 Maxey Award in Water Resources Research for her paper regarding the use of a mathematical model for simulating the movement of dissolved material in ground water through various types of geologic strata.

Xu, a Ph. D. student in the University of Nevada, Reno Program of Hydrologic Sciences, received a $1,000 prize for her competitive paper, entitled “Reactive Solute Transport in a Nonstationary, Fractured Porous Medium: A Dual Porosity Approach." She is continuing her studies while working in DRI's Division of Hydrologic Sciences at the institute's Southern Nevada Science Center in Las Vegas.

The award was established in the honor of the late Dr. George B. and Jane C. Maxey and is based on competitive research papers submitted by students on subjects related to water science and engineering. Applicants must be enrolled in relevant graduate programs on the University of Nevada campuses in Reno or Las Vegas. Dr. Maxey was executive director of DRI’s Division of Hydrologic Sciences for 10 years until his death in 1977. He established the University of Nevada's hydrologic sciences curriculum that produced the first doctoral program in the University and Community College System of Nevada.

A nonprofit, statewide division of the University and Community College System of Nevada, DRI pursues a full-time program of basic and applied environmental research on a local, national, and international scale. Nearly 500 full- and part-time scientists, technicians, and support staff conduct some 150 research projects at DRI annually. More than 85 percent of DRI's annual $33 million operating budget consists of research grants and contracts obtained by its scientists. The balance is received from the state of Nevada for administrative costs.
