DRI and Sierra Pacific to unveil GreenPower program in Reno
Mountain View Montessori will be 15th site in Nevada
RENO – The Desert Research Institute and Sierra Pacific Resources will be unveiling its GreenPower structure at the Mountain View Montessori School Community Room, Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. The school is located at 565 Zolezzi Lane in Reno.
As part of the program, Mountain View Montessori will celebrate “Sustainability and Renewable Resources Day” and students representing each class will make short presentations about their lessons in renewable energy. The school is the 15th GreenPower school in Nevada and the first private school to participate in the GreenPower program. Carson City Middle School, French Ford Middle School, Mendive Middle School and Traner Middle School are the other schools in the northern Nevada area, which are participating in the program.
“Thanks to the generous support of our program partner Sierra Pacific, this program is able to reach directly into the schools to support and promote the use and development of renewable energy sources in Nevada,” said Steve Wells, DRI President.
The GreenPower intallation at the Mountain View Montessori School includes a photovoltaic (solar) system and wind turbine. Data from the system can be accessed on the internet where students and teachers can monitor the solar and wind production daily or look at historical records. The system will also boast a very sophisticated weather station. This was funded by matching grants from Sierra Pacific Resources, the Nevada State Office of Energy, and the northern Nevada donors to the Desert Research Institute’s GreenPower program.
